cherrytree

Planted a cherry tree today!! No, it doesn't look like this yet.....
Had to stop after planting the tree, as the weather (a thunderstorm!) defeated me.
I still need to plant the Sweet Peas and the
Climbing Rose.

The garden - update.

Blackwall330s

Not a very romantic image, perhaps, but this is what my compost bin looks like! And I'm very proud of it!! If anyone can be bothered to read the earlier entries, you will be reminded that I was rehoused by Camden Council because my landlady was harrassing me because I got the compost bin!  But in fact she has done me a favour, because I now have a lovely patio garden, where I can grow everything in containers -

I have very quickly got into the habit of putting the kitchen waste into the compost caddy - in fact so much so that I always look for it in my partner's kitchen - he doesn't have one!!  It is just so wonderful, being able to compost and recycle - I have always grown my own vegetables and herbs, and now I will be able to grow even more. I have some fruit trees in pots - the peach tree has already got some little pink flowers! It fruited for the first time last year - some small but really juicy and delicious fruit.
I do have some flowers as well - I especially love fuchsias,  fuchsiasespecially dramatically dark-coloured ones like this!
I never went back to my old accommodation, I expect she has had it concreted over by now...isn't it odd that she hated
gardens and growth and recycling!!

Green member elected to Northern Ireland assembly

Greens jubilant about historical Assembly breakthrough

Issued: 09 March 2007

– Groundswell in support across province sees Brian Wilson elected

The Green Party celebrated an historical political breakthrough today with the election of Brian Wilson to the Northern Ireland Assembly. The chairperson of the Greens in Northern Ireland was elected in the North Down constituency on the tenth count. He took one of six seats after a two-day count, having initially won 9.2 per cent of first preference votes.

Speaking from the North Down counting centre in Newtownards, Green Party MLA Brian Wilson said: "I am thrilled to have the opportunity of pushing forward Green Party policy in the Assembly. We are one of the youngest political parties in Northern Ireland but these elections have shown the level of support out there for our policies, and how quickly this support is growing. It is tremendously rewarding that the Greens will now be a permanent fixture in the political landscape of Northern Ireland.

"The Green vote is up across the province. From our first contested campaign in 2003, support has grown and in this campaign we averaged nearly 2.5 per cent of first preferences in the constituencies in which we fielded candidates. I would like to dearly thank the thousands of people who voted Green this year and gave us their transfers. The fruits of the peace process can be seen in the electorate's willingness to let us deal with the big issues of climate change, environmental protection and achieving sustainable economic growth for all of the people of Northern Ireland."

Green Party Leader Trevor Sargent TD said: "Today represents a giant step for the Green Party in Ireland. Brian's election, which resulted from extensive cross-community support, means that there is now Green representation at every level of political power on this island. Today's outcome, which many people doubted was possible, is further proof of the growing tide of public opinion that is recognising that the existing political parties lack the vision and determination to create and maintain an equal, just and prosperous society for all of the people of this island."
